MARITIME OPERATIONS
Maritime traffic in the Arctic is increasing
Vessel transits through the Bering Strait have doubled in the past decade. As the ice-free season lengthens, more ships will continue to pass through the waterway. A sea traffic management system, developed in collaboration with communities helps improve safe passage and protects the health and wellbeing of the regions' people, wildlife, and food security.
Arctic Watch employs a network of Marine Safety Sites equipped with various sensors that collect and transmits vessel positions, environmental conditions and VHF communiations. Information is relayed and monitored at a 24/7 Maritime Operations Center and critical information is shared with the U.S. Coast Guard and enrolled vessels and communities.
